Commentary

First published in Simone 1986: 102 sub c.

Image in Simone 1986: 103, tav. 1 c (drawing).

The reading au is tentatively suggested by Morandi based on the very small drawing of the graffito in Simone; Morandi thinks that the two even smaller chevrons indicated in the drawing at a little distance from the first may be a repetition of the same two characters. As Morandi himself observes, Latin influence would have to be assumed for alpha; this conflicts with inverted upsilon, atypical for both Lepontic and Latin alphabet. The characters are most likely non-script marks; cf. the olla bearing a single mark on the wall from the same grave (Simone 1986: 102 sub g). Also from the same grave VA·7 and VA·8.

Also mentioned in Solinas 1995: 385.
