Commentary

Common as first element in Gaulish personal names (e.g. ambiorix, ambimogidus), ethnonyms (e.g. ambitouti, ambisontes) and toponyms (e.g. ambianis > Amiens). Lexically in Gaul. ambactos 'servant' (Festus 2.20), possibly ambito (Lezoux, L-66 line 9), Gallo-Lat. ambosta 'what can be held in both hands' (FEW s.v.), Celtib. ampitiśeti (Botorrita I A5), ampi[ (Botorrita IV A4), and in Insular Celtic (OIr. imb, OW im, MBret. am, etc.). See AcS I: 117, KGP: 122–125, GPN: 134–137, DLG: 40–43, Delamarre 2007: 210 et passim, Prósper 2008: 43 f., 46, Matasović 2009 s.v., Uhlich 2010, Zair 2012: 36, Wodtko 2013: 222 f. Possibly also intensive function, cf. KGP: 122 f., GPN: 134.
