The lexical morpheme ''king''- (OIr. ''cingid'') is well attested in Continental Celtic personal names, often with a prefix {{m||eχs-}}, indicating a lexical verbal compound *''eχsking''- 'step out, attack'; cf. the derivation ''king''{{m||-et|et}}- 'warrior' (in personal names ''cingetorix'', ''vercingetorix''; OIr. ''cing''; {{bib|Irslinger 2002}}: 58). On the PIE etymology, doubtful because of unexpected ''k'' instead of ''g'' in the anlaut, see {{bib|IEW}}: 438 f., {{bib|LEIA}}: C-102, {{bib|LIV²}}: 175 f.; {{bib|Matasović 2009}} s.v. *''keng''- prefers the root *(''s'')''keng''- 'walk lamely' ({{bib|IEW}} 930, {{bib|LIV²}}: 555).
