Names containing an element ''kos''(''s'')- are attested throughout the Gaulish area, see {{bib|AcS}} I: 1136–1140, {{bib|Evans 1967}}: 334, {{bib|Meid 2005}}: 265, {{bib|Delamarre 2007}}: 218. As observed by Evans and Meid, it is not certain that the base is etymologically Celtic. Delamarre assumes that a base with a tau gallicum auslaut ''kosti''/''u''- > ''kossi''/''u''- > ''kosi''/''u''-, but proposes no etymology.
