Reading not quite certain and possibly incomplete in the beginning, see the inscription page.

If Celtic, the form must be a genitive in {{m||-ī}}; due to the non-obvious structure of the text, specifically the form's relation to the other word in the inscription, it is not entirely certain that the form is a patronym (as opposed to a genitive '(stela) of Ranen(i)os).

Good Gaulish onomastic comparanda are sparse; the best candidate is ''rand''- as in the epithet of Mars ''randosatis'' ({{bib|CIL}} XIII 1516) and the personal name ''ueniranda'' ({{bib|CIL}} X 2940), maybe also ''rannius'' ({{bib|CIL}} XIII 10001) with assimilation, but cf. also ''ranocorus'' ({{bib|CIIC}} 458) (see {{bib|AcS}} II: 1073, {{bib|Delamarre 2007}}: 151, 229; cf. {{bib|Lejeune 1971}}: 64, n. 216). Delamarre ({{bib|DLG}}: 164 f. s.v. ''equoranda'', following {{bib|LEIA}}: R-7) speculates about a connection of Gaul. ''rand''- with OIr. ''rann'', W ''rhan'' 'division, part', though this is questionable etymologically (IE *''pr̥sh₃nā''? The putative Gaulish comparandum is not mentioned in {{bib|Matasović 2009}}: 138 f. s.v. *''frasnā''.) The form seems to be derived with the suffix {{m||-en-}}.
