Commentary
Gaulish *ētu- 'meadow, pasture, (grazing) land' ('OIr. íath 'land') is derived from the PIE root *pei̯H- 'swell, be fat' → *pei̯H-tu- (Brugmann 1906: 442, IEW: 793 f., LIV²: 464 f., De Bernardo Stempel 1999: 292, DLG: 168, Matasović 2009 s.v. fētu-; see Irslinger 2002: 166 following Seebold for an alternative etymology).
The word appears as element of personal names (both first and second element of compounds, see DLG: 168, Delamarre 2007: 221 et passim) and, prominently, in the ethnonym helvetii (*elu̯-ēt-ii̯ī) according to Thurneysen's etymology (see eluveitie).
