Commentary
The u-stem magu- 'youth, boy, servant' is attested lexically in OIr. mug 'boy, servant' etc. (see DLG: 214, LEIA: M-70 f.), and in numerous Gaulish personal names, e.g. cf. e.g. RIIG VAU-05-05 (RIG G-121) μαγουρειγι, CIL XIII 5803 magunia (Langres), see AcS II: 385 f., KGP: 235, GPN: 222, Delamarre 2007: 225 et passim. Cognate with Germanic forms (Goth. magus 'boy' etc.) and probably Av. magava- 'unmarried', but the etymology is ultimately unclear (cf. Matasović 2009: 274, IEW: 696).
