McCone 1992: 105 suggests a derivation from older *ou̯no- to connect the forms further with OIr. úath 'terror' and potentially Lat. pauor 'fear'. In Gaulish personal names with first element eχs- 'without' or su- 'good'; see KGP: 250. For the assimilation /bn/ > /mn/ cf. dubn-.
