Commentary
Prehistoric settlement on a hill (328 m a.s.l.) north of the village Montmorot, overlooking the Bresse plain and the basin of Lons-le-Saunier. Much of the site, which was occupied already in the late Neolithic (3100–2700 BC) and then between Hallstatt B1 (10th c. BC) and D1–2 (late 6th c. BC), flourishing in the 7th and 6th c. BC, was destroyed by the building of a mediaeval château. See Verger 2001: 265–270 on the excavation history, strata and finds. The area of the site appears to have profited both from the local salt deposits and its situation along the route connecting the Rhône and Rhine, and to have been superseded by the site of Camp de Château at Salins-les-Bains. See Verger 2001: 288–312 for details.
