Commentary

The fraction San Pietro of Stabio, its oldest part situated on a hill to the north of the modern centre of Stabio, is the site of the pre-Roman and Roman finds of the area. Beside the late Roman necropolis of Vignetto northeast of the hill, two late Iron Age cremation graves were found during excavations in 1937 at the site of a Roman villa at the foot of the hill a little southwest of the church (property Realini-Rusconi). See Simonett 1941: 2, 24–26, 177–179. They likely represent the remains of one or more La Tène necropoleis which also yielded the three Celtic grave stelae found in the area.
