Commentary
The u-stem lūtu- in Gaulish personal names such as CIL XIII 7553 lutumarus, V 3358 lutonia (Verona), AE 1955, 611 lutullae (Como) (see Delamarre 2007: 121, 225) is usually connected with OIr. lúth 'power of movement, vigour' as in the PN lúthmhár, which corresponds exactly to the Gaulish lutumaros lit. 'great in strength/vigour'. The translation as 'passion, anger' uel. sim (e.g. KGP: 233 f., DLG: 212, Matasović 2009: 250) stems from an assumed connection with MW llid 'rage', which may not belong here (see lāt-); a further connection with Slavic forms like OCS ljutъ 'angry' (IEW: 691) is thus also doubtful (see GPN: 218, Zair 2012: 116).
