Type: lexical
Meaning: 'plain'
Language: Celtic
Phonemic analysis: /lān/-
From PIE: *pl̥h₂-nó- 'flattened'
From Proto-Celtic: *lāno- 'plain'
Attestation: meśiolano

Commentary

This derivation of the PIE root *pelh₂- 'flat' is not attested lexically in Celtic, which instead has forms < *pl̥h₂-ró- (OIr. lár 'ground, floor', etc.), *pl(a)h₂-tro- (OIr. láthar 'map; situation', etc.) and < *pl̥h₂-mah₂ (OIr. lám 'hand', etc.); see NIL: 562–564 with n. 7 (and cf. lāt-). *lāno- 'plain' is only assumed to be attested in the toponym mediolanum; see there for further discussion.
