Commentary

Lexically in OIr. fīn, W gwin etc. 'wine'; uncertain Cisalpine Celtic uinom would be the only Continental Celtic attestation of the word, which is usually assumed to be a loan from Latin u̯īnum, though another route of the Wanderwort into Celtic cannot be excluded. That the form is inherited from PIE is unlikely for cultural-historical reasons, despite the attempts to give the word a PIE etymology (e.g. from the root *u̯i̯eh₁- uel sim. 'wind, twist', see De Vaan 2008: 680).
