Commentary
Names beginning in sur- are well attested, see AcS II: 1672–1682, Delamarre 2007: 175, but etymologically unclear. While a subset of the numerous attestations of surus, sura are likely to belong to other languages than Celtic, their distribution suggests that an etymologically Celtic strand is part of the mix (cf. AcS II: 1678, GPN: 472 f., Meid 2005: 289). *suH-ro- 'sour' floated by Meid (cf. IEW: 1039) is not continued in Celtic; possibly the base is itself shortened from names in su- 'good' + second element in r-, e.g. su-rat-os or surios, which is analysed as su-rii̯-os (a Deckname for syrios) by Delamarre 2007: 175.
