Type: lexical
Meaning: 'fear'
Language: Celtic
Phonemic analysis: /obn/-
From Proto-Celtic: *obno- 'fear'
Attestation: esonius, esopnio, esopnos, exobna

Commentary

Lexically in OIr. omun (u-stem), MW ofuyn, MBret. oun, Co. own; etymology unclear (see Matasović 2009: 295 f., LEIA: O-22). McCone 1992: 105 suggests a derivation from older *ou̯no- to connect the forms further with OIr. úath 'terror' and potentially Lat. pauor 'fear'. In Gaulish personal names with first element eχs- 'without' or su- 'good'; see KGP: 250. For the assimilation /bn/ > /mn/ cf. dubn-.
