Masculine ''on''-stem personal name in the nominative ({{bib|Pisani 1953}}: 272 = {{bib|Pisani 1964|1964}}: 285). Probably hypocoristic from a compound with first element {{m||dēu̯-|dēu̯o-}} 'god' ({{bib|Lejeune 1971}}: 24, {{bib|Delamarre 2007}}: 181, e.g. ''deuognata'', ''deuorix'', see the morpheme page). Phonetically, the form could be [dēu̯ū] with non-spelling of the glide ({{bib|Lejeune 1971}}: 24, 62, {{bib|Eska 1998c}}: 71, {{bib|Eska & Mercado 2005}}: 164) or, theoretically, [dēū] with loss of the glide (or derived from a compound in which the element was already simplified, e.g. ''deopantus'', cf. {{bib|DLG}}: 142 f.).
