Commentary
Masculine on-stem personal name in the nominative (Pisani 1953: 272 = 1964: 285). Probably hypocoristic from a compound with first element dēu̯o- 'god' (Lejeune 1971: 24, Delamarre 2007: 181, e.g. deuognata, deuorix, see the morpheme page). Phonetically, the form could be [dēu̯ū] with non-spelling of the glide (Lejeune 1971: 24, 62, Eska 1998c: 71, Eska & Mercado 2005: 164) or, theoretically, [dēū] with loss of the glide (or derived from a compound in which the element was already simplified, e.g. deopantus, cf. DLG: 142 f.).
Tibiletti Bruno 1978: 141 and Motta 2000: 196 also consider a reading tēu̯.
See also Stüber 1998: 108.
