Type: lexical
Meaning: 'guest'
Language: perhaps Celtic
Phonemic analysis: /go?/-
From PIE: *gʰosti- 'stranger'
From Proto-Celtic: (*go?i- 'guest')
Attestation: uvamokozis

Commentary

Certain continuations only in Western Indo-European (Lat. hostis 'enemy, stranger', Germ. gasti- 'guest', OCS gostь 'guest'), see NIL: 173. The element is not continued in Insular Celtic and not attested lexically or onomastically in Continental Celtic. The Cisalpine Celtic attestation in uvamokozis appears to show the Celtic sound change of *st > ts (uel sim., tau gallicum) and may thus be inherited in Lepontic; alternatively, it may be borrowed from a neighbouring/substrate IE language (e.g. -gostis in Ligurian PNN) and show Celtic sound substitution. See further on uvamokozis.
