Commentary

OIr. tengae, OW tauawt, MBret. teaut, OCo. tauot gl. lingua (Matasović 2009 s.v. *tangwāt-). PIE *dn̥ǵu̯heh₂ was transferred to a consonantal t-stem in Celtic (Widmer 1997: 122–124, Irslinger 2002: 47 f.); the deviant anlaut is probably due to taboo transformation (LEIA T-50 f., Widmer 1997: 122). The possible Cisalpine Celtic attestations are not t-stems (see the word pages).
