Type: lexical
Meaning: 'battle'; 'drive, lead'
Language: Celtic
Phonemic analysis: /ag/-
From PIE: *h₂eg̑- 'drive, lead'
From Proto-Celtic: *ag(-o)- 'battle'; 'drive, lead'
Attestation: akitu, akiui

Commentary

The verbal root *ag-e/o- is continued in Insular Celtic (OIr. ag- etc. 'drive, conduct; walk', see KP: 189–193, LEIA: A-22, Matasović 2009: 27). Its attestation in Continental Celtic is very uncertain, but a derived noun ago- 'battle' (OIr. ág with uncertain stem class) is posited for Gaulish personal names such as CIL V 5340 comago (Como), agomarus (potter's name), see DLG: 35, Delamarre 2007: 210 et passim, KGP: 119, GPN: 300, NIL: 267–277.
