Commentary

In 1894, Enrico Bianchetti, upon the request of land owner Augusto Curioni of Orta, excavated ca. 15 tombs without furniture in the locality Campello at Carcegna, a fraction of Miasino, dated probably to the Middle Ages. Following the stray finding of two Iron-age objects in the area (NO·18 Miasino) in 1903, and of further "fittili antichi" in the early 1950s, an excavation was conducted in 1973. The latter revealed 36 tombs dating from the mid-2nd c. BC to the 4th c. AD, whose furniture is kept at the Museo Civico Antiquarium (Mergozzo). See Caramella & De Giuli 1993: 131–172 with tav. XLVIII–LXII, Gambari 2019: 93 f.
