Commentary

Images in Lattes 1904: tav. (photos = Rhŷs 1913: tav. VII), Gambari 2019: 95, fig. 1 (drawing and photos) and 97, fig. 2 (photo).

Small lenticular flask whose neck is missing, found together with a ceramic bowl and other fragments by a farmer in the area of the Carcegna necropolis. (Approximate coordinates according to RAPTOR; on the lost bowl see Gambari 2019: 93.) The typology of the unusual vessel is discussed in Gambari 2019: 94 f., who estimates its full height at max. 8 cm; significantly smaller than the similarly shaped vasi a trottola, the flask holds about 20 cl and is likely to have contained a cosmetic product rather than drink, and to have been closed with a stopper. Gambari suggests a typological dating to the mid-3rd c. BC (LT C 1), but see the inscription page on palaeographical considerations which indicate a lower dating. Seen by Rhŷs in 1913 and 1914, the vessel could not be found in Curioni's house in Orta when Whatmough requested to see it 1923 (PID: 120). Recorded vaguely as being in private possession by Tibiletti Bruno, Solinas and Morandi, the vase was located by Gambari in the possession of R. Pellegrino of Orta San Giulio, to whom Curioni's collection had passed through Augusto Mazzetti in 1987.
