Verbal root PC *u̯ik- from the PIE root *u̯eik- 'fight' (*u̯ik-é/ó- > OIr. fichid etc. [LEIA: D-140], MW amwyn, MBret. amouez 'set free' < *ambi-u̯ik-o-; IEW: 1128 f., LIV²: 670 f., Matasović 2009 s.v. *wik-o-). Attested in Continental Celtic with various stems in personal names (e.g., uiridouix, brigouicis, diouicus, uiruico, ueruicia, uicarus, uicasius; s. also dī- on dīu̯iko- 'avenge'), ethnonyms (e.g., brannouices, eburouices, latouici) and maybe epithets (ελκεσοουιξ, G-146 βλανδοουικουνιαι), see AcS III: 281, 419, KGP: 285–287, GPN: 281–285, DLG: 318, Delamarre 2007: 236 et passim).
