Commentary
An element soli-, less often solu- or solo-, is well attested in Gaulish onomastics, as usually first element in compounds (e.g. CIL XII 2921 solimarus, XIII 3095 solirix, V 4748 solibodui [gen., Brescia]) and in monothematic or hypocoristic names (e.g. CIL V 7445 solicius, XIII 2928 solini [gen.]), see AcS II: 1599–1613, KGP 270 f., Delamarre 2007: 232 et passim. Schmidt KGP: 270 f. wants to connect soli- with *sūli- 'eye' (OIr. súil), noting pairs like solinus/sulinus, but /o/ in the root would be unmotivated (cf. DLG: 287). Also attested soll- (e.g. CIL XIII 2560 sollia, V 5830 sollonius [Milano; also in Brescia and Verona]) is connected with W holl 'all' (if from PIE *solh₂- 'all'; see oll-) by Delamarre 2007: 232.
