Commentary

Sporadically attested in Gaulish personal names (uercobius, cobiatia, cobeia [theonym]) and toponyms (cobiomagos, cobogennates), see KGP: 174, GPN: 185, DLG: 120, Delamarre 2007: X (to be distinguished from names in com- with assimilation, KGP: 96–98, GPN: 183–186). Usually associated with rare OIr. (poetic) cob gl. buaid 'victory', which in turn is compared with ON happ 'good luck', OCS kobь 'fate' etc., all of which can be variously derived from a PIE root *kobʰ-, though the connection is somewhat tenuous (IEW: 610, DLG: 120, Matasović 2009 s.v. *kob(o)-, Kroonen 2013 s.v. *happ/bōn- 2).
