Commentary

See the inscription page on the uncertain reading.

The form, if correct, is unclear. Pauli 1888: 46 analyses it as a neuter o-stem noun and compares Celtic toponyms in rat-, while Molinari 1974: 70 f. suggests an n-stem with "suffisso nominale" -mōn- from the base rat-. Whether -mon is interpreted as the second element of a compound mono/i/u- '?' (see Delamarre 2007: 227) or as the suffix -mon/mn- (which is hardly attested in Celtic outside of Irish; see Stüber 1998: 144–168), the missing stem vowel and ending are problematic. Molinari assumes that the stem vowel was syncopated, and that the form is an abbreviation of a genitive, dative or patronym (**rato-monos/-monei̯/-moniknos vel sim.), but both these assumptions are ad hoc.
