Commentary
The dative plural ending of consonant stems (PIE *-bʰos) acquired a vowel through different paths. In r-stems, -r̥-bos > -ri-bos through regular sound change, with /i/ in unstressed position subsequently lowered to /e/. This is attested in Gaulish RIIG MOR-01-01 (RIG L-15) atrebo 'to the Fathers', GAR-10-01 (RIG G-207), BDR-12-02 (RIG G-64) ματρεϐο 'to the Mothers' (all with lost final -/s/). In the Lepontic n-stem ariuonepos, /e/ may have been transferred from the r-stems (Stüber 1998: 19) as well as from the i-stems (Lejeune 1971: 103 f.). On Celtiberian CIL II 2848 matrubos see Jordán Cólera in RIIG GAR-10-01.
