Commentary

Nominal form in the dative plural (Tibiletti Bruno 1966b: 305 f.), probably determines uvltiauiopos; unclear whether lexical or onomastic. on-stem with generalised full grade in the plural and transfer of the stem vowel from i-stems (or from r-stems, where r̥-bos > ri-bos, see Stüber 1998: 19); the latter > /e/ in unstressed position (Lejeune 1971: 103 f.).

Tibiletti Bruno 1966b: 305–307 cognomen, clan name, ethnicon or epithet, ariuos on coin legends of the Santones, 301 notes that it is a second term in -on- like plialeθu (also Eska 1995: 36 f.); Lejeune 1971: 103 f. "nom obscure"; Motta 1983: 66 f., Motta 1992: 314, Motta 2000: 198 compares toponym Airuno (attested 1188 AD) near Como, ariuones 'those from A.'; Markey & Mees 2003: 152–154 (tribal name with etymology from PIE *h₂erh₃- 'plow', cf. Eska 2024d: 89); Prósper 2008b: 48 *ari̯o-mn- > *ari̯ou̯n- (misspelled), cf. Eska 2024d: 90. Eska 2024d: 90 f. ari̯o- as in OIr. aire 'noble, freeman' + -u̯on- 'those having foremostness, noble ones' (already Prosdocimi 1986: 240 in passing).
