Commentary
Images in Cristofani 1977: tav. XXXIb and c, XXXIIa (photos).
Inscribed on the shoulder of the olla just below the rim; well legible except for pi, which is damaged by a break, but clear. The letters are executed by a different hand than the decoration, and with some uncertainty: the waw
of viku was begun as an alpha
, and waw and epsilon in muluevneke are transposed (Cristofani 1977: 198). Reading and interpretation according to Cristofani 1977: 198 f., who follows Colonna's suggestion (at a conference) to identify viku as the personal name of the subject and donor of the gift. Cristofani merely identifies the name as belonging to a group of "Individualnamen" in -u attested in the 7th century. It is classified as Celtic and compared with putative viχu (VA·4.2) by Morandi 2004: 573, n. 33. While it is not clear what a random Celt was doing in 7th-century Chiusi, giving vases to Etruscan ladies, Etruscan comparanda for the base are absent (according to the index of ET²).
