Commentary
Replying to Lejeune 1972, Devoto justifies his choice of the term "Lepontic" for a reality which is based archaeologically on the Golasecca culture and linguistically on certain characteristics of the Ligurian and Lombard dialects. He accuses Lejeune of excessive rigidity and schematism, beginning with his refusal to deviate from pure epigraphy, up to the lack of awareness for the fact that the Indo-European linguistic traditions are not an absolutely distinct and juxtaposed entity.
