Commentary

The lexeme *au̯os 'grandson, descendant' (OIr. aue, Ogam AVI [gen.] < *au̯(i)i̯os etc., s. DLG: 60 s.v. aua, Matasović 2009: 49 f., LEIA: A-103 f., Zair 2012: 250 on possible ā; the absence of a -suffix in Gaulish is surprising) is attested in Gaulish in RIIG VAU-05-05 (RIG G-121) αουα (Cavaillon) and possibly in RIG L-131 auo (dat.?), onomastically e.g. in aua, auonus (s. Delamarre 2007: 212 et passim). (Differently Meid 2005: 218, who connects these names with the verbal root *au̯e- (OIr. -, -oat 'protect'.)
