Commentary
Lexically in OIr. mes(s) 'judgement', tu-abstract from the PIE root *med- 'measure', see LEIA M-42, Matasović 2009: 269, Irslinger 2002: 116 f. Common in Gaulish onomastics in spellings with overt tau gallicum and with ⟨ss⟩, see AcS II: 575–577, Rhŷs 1914: 41 f., KGP: 240 f., GPN: 367 f., DLG: 223, Stüber 2005: 94, Delamarre 2007: 227 et passim. The commonness of derivations with /i/ in the stem indicates the existence of a ti- beside the tu-derivation in Gaulish (GPN: 36, DLG: 223; Latin influence according to Schmidt KGP: 240).
