Commentary

Personal names in mokk-, sometimes with simplified cluster mok-, are particularly well attested in Liguria and northern Italy (e.g. CIL V 7749 moco, 6644 mocconis [gen.], 7147 moccius, 6042 moccilonis [gen.], 7673 moccasus, see AcS II: 602–605, Delamarre 2007: 134, 227). They are connected with OIr. mucc, W moch, Corn. mogh, Bret. moc’h 'pig' (KGP: 243, Meid 2005: 201, DLG: 228, LEIA: M-68, Matasović 2009: 274 f.). Testen 1999 suggests a PIE etymology < *mo(H)-pk̑-u- 'big^? livestock' with zero-grade of *pek̑u- as second element (cf. Stifter 2024: 11 f.).
