Commentary
Individual name in the nominative; a number of options are available for the analysis of the base. The name may be etymologically Celtic and derived from the theonym lug-; cf. DLG: 211 and the names in Delamarre 2007: 120 f., 225, esp. CIL XII 4468 lugius. Names in ⟨luc(c)⟩- are attested on Gaulish coins (e.g. RIG M-198 luccios, M-199 lucios, M-201 lucotios), as potter's names (e.g. luceios, lucinus), and in Latin inscriptions from the Gaulish area; see Delamarre 2007: 120, 225, who suggests a connection with either u̯lk- 'wolf' or the 'lynx'-word (DLG: 210). Some of the luk(k)-names may be variants of names in lug- or leu̯k- 'bright' (see Meid 2005: 274 f.); in addition, the Latin praenomen lucius (base cognate with leu̯k-) is likely to play a part as a loan name used as an individual name, often with a Celticised ending – so also in the present case, considering the strong Latin influence at Cerrione.
