Though incomplete, the name can be assumed to be a patronym in {{m||-al-}} ''makonalui'' or ''makonalai'' from a personal name ''on''-stem ''makū'' or derived ''o''-stem ''makonos''. The best comparanda are names in {{m||magu-}} 'youth', cf. e.g. {{bib|CIL}} V 4609 {{tr|lat|MAGONI}} (gen., Brescia), XIII 5803 {{tr|lat|magunia}} (Langes), variant with /{{p||k}}{{p||kk|(k)}}/ V 6931 {{tr|lat|maconi}} (gen., Valperga) ({{bib|Delamarre 2007}}: 124). Cf. {{bib|Tibiletti Bruno 1978}}: 139. A connection with ''magi''- 'grand' cannot be excluded, but is less likely due to the absence of /{{p||i}}/ in the stem. Commentary
Though incomplete, the name can be assumed to be a patronym in -al- makonalui or makonalai from a personal name on-stem makū or derived o-stem makonos. The best comparanda are names in magu- 'youth', cf. e.g. CIL V 4609 MAGONI (gen., Brescia), XIII 5803 magunia (Langes), variant with /k(k)/ V 6931 maconi (gen., Valperga) (Delamarre 2007: 124). Cf. Tibiletti Bruno 1978: 139. A connection with magi- 'grand' cannot be excluded, but is less likely due to the absence of /i/ in the stem. Also theoretically possible is a derivation with the suffix -om-. See also Salomon 2024: 148 f.
