The form is an ''o''-stem personal name formed with an ''l''-suffix (see {{m||-il(l)-}}). Celtic comparanda can be found, if sparsely, for both ''rup''- and ''rub''-. See the discussion in {{bib|Rhŷs 1913}}: 24 of some of the forms cited by Holder {{bib|AcS}} II: 1237, esp. ''rubellinus'' in Transalpine Gaul, though the distribution in place names may indicate a non-Celtic base (cf. '''{{bib|Motta 2000}}: 212'''). The form is an o-stem personal name formed with an l-suffix (see -il(l)-). Celtic comparanda can be found, if sparsely, for both rup- and rub-. See the discussion in Rhŷs 1913: 24 of some of the forms cited by Holder AcS II: 1237, esp. rubellinus in Transalpine Gaul, though the distribution in place names may indicate a non-Celtic base (cf. Motta 2000: 212). Holder AcS II: 1248 lists isolated onomastic forms in rup-; Schmidt KGP: 116, 262 has CIL XIII 994 adruppo (Aquitania). Cf. also the coin legend RIG M-247 rupios.
