Commentary

The Gaulish word for 'father' (OIr. athair) is attested in the dative plural atrebo 'to the fathers' on the stela of Plumergat (RIIG MOR-01-01 [RIG L-15]) and in the vocative ater on a Châteaubleau tile (RIG L-93, line 6); see Matasović 2009: 126, LEIA: A-100, Lambert 1994: 16, DLG: 58, NIL: 555, 558, n. 16. Delamarre DLG: 58 and 2007: 211 et passim connects some personal names in ater- (ateronius, aterus, aternus, also esuateros), but see ateratos for an alternative analysis.
