Commentary
Maybe a hypochorism of a compound of veni- like uenu. Previous interpretations of this form as a vocative are dubious. Cf. Gaul. ουευιτοουτα, Venicarus, Venimarus, Vennus, Ogam annveni, OIr. fine meaning "family" (Lejeune 1971: 51, fn. 126, 62, fn. 190, 74, Hamp 1974: 14, Motta 2000: 213, RIG: I 106, Holder 1896-1907: III168-173, CIIC 214, KGP: 289-290, GPN: 277-279, DLG: 313, Delamarre 2007: 194, 195, 235-6, McCone 1996: 105, Matasović 2009: 413-4, De Bernardo Stempel 1999: 371, IEW: 1147, Stüber 2005: 63, 91, De Vaan 2008: 661).
