Commentary

This attested form could have preserved pie */kw/ (see Eska 2006: 232 fn. 7, Eska & Evans 2009: 36) It could be a hypochorism of a compound of *kuo- (/*kuo-/ or /*guo-/), which could also be the second element of atekua; cf. Cua, Cuasus etc. (cf. Lejeune 1971: 50, 52, 63, 68, Tibiletti Bruno 1978: 139, 165). See also Motta 2000: 199. Sims-Williams (2007: 332 fn. 118) compares kualui with "Welsh gwelw "pale" if this has *gwh".
