Commentary

Inscribed in letters of decreasing size on the foot of the beaker. De Marinis & Biaggio Simona read iapiei, cf. Morandi. Pernet et al. 2006: 229 do not give a reading. Initial iap- with tall iota is clear, and the last one cannot be anything but another iota, but the two other letters are too damaged for a reading, the black varnish having chipped off around them. Epsilon or alpha for the second-to-last letter are feasible, as a lower bar may just be made out as a deeper groove. An ending -āi̯ or -ei̯ could indicate a personal name in the dative (see the word page), but the reading is very uncertain, and the relation of the inscription to the other one on the foot is unclear.
