Commentary
Possibly an abbreviation of a personal name, though none of the potential comparanda – Morandi 2003: 134 (no. 15) suggests paucevus and pauton listed in AcS II: 957, 959 as well as names in baud- (AcS I: 360 f.; these, however, are probably mostly Latinised spellings of bou̯d-, cf. Lambert 1994: 42; cf. maybe tau) – are particularly convincing. Delamarre 2007: 38 has baussus and baustio from Noricum of unknown etymology, cf. Lochner von Hüttenbach 1989: 29 f., who further connects CIL III 4888, 4889 bauso (cf. also Raetic φausu). Delamarre DLG: 69 s.v. baua tentatively connects CIL III 14348 bauila (also Noricum) with *bou̯ā 'mud, dirt', but this does not make a plausible personal name element. There are no other names in pau- attested in the Cisalpine Celtic corpus.
