Commentary

Analysis according to Eichner in Eichner et al. 1994: 136 f., who identifies a Celtic name from the base brog- 'border, territory'. The etymology of the dental element is unclear. The inflectional ending could be genitive -ī from brogduos (patronymic or benefactive) or dative -ūi̯ from brogdos. Eichner, going with the dative, interprets the name as a theonym belonging to a deity of borders. Cf. also DLG: 91.

Considering the easterly find place of only attestation and its late dating, the name is hardly Cisalpine Gaulish, but rather belongs to an Ambi-Danubian Celtic (Tauriscan?) filum.
