Commentary

Variant of the theonym Poeninos. Here apparently a dative of an on-stem poinon- with the suffix vowel of the nominative transferred to the oblique case (poinūnos instead of regular poinonos; cf. Stifter 2011c). Motta in Casini et al. 2008: 99 (n. 49) observes that the form represents a transfer from the regular o-stem poininos (dat. *poininui, Latinised poenino) to an on-stem. However, the etymology of the name being not quite clear, the o-stem poininos may be an adjectival derivation poi̯n-īn-o- from a primary on-stem. We're working on this, stay tuned.
