Commentary

Silver mastos, complete apart from a small hole in the bottom; current weight 210 g (Stenico 1964: 158). The association with the river Terdoppio (Mirabella Roberti 1962: VIII, no. 940, EDH HD017530) seems to be due to a confusion with a similar, anepigraphic object (Stenico 1964: 158–160, Tibiletti Bruno 1964: 184, n. 8, Morandi). Stenico 1964: 157 notes that the museum has no information about the find place, and that the object can only be said to be probably from the Lomellina; according to Morandi, who cites some literature which is inaccessible to me, it was found in an incineration grave in Zerbo in 1912. Dated to the 1st century AD in Mirabella Roberti 1962: VIII, no. 940. Stenico 1964: 160–165 compares silver cups found at San Bernardo and dates them to the 2nd century BC based on coin finds at the latter site; his dating is accepted by Tibiletti Bruno 1964: 184, but Tibiletti Bruno 1981: 173 reverts to the 1st century AD. Morandi gives a dating to the late 2nd–early 1st century BC; EDH has 201 BC–50 AD.
