Commentary

First published in Jacobsthal & Langsdorff 1929: 58.

Images in Jacobsthal & Langsdorff 1929: Tav. 23 (photo), Crivelli 1977: 27, fig. 9 (drawing), De Marinis 2000: 393, fig. 30 (photo) and 395, fig. 32 (drawing = Pernet et al. 2006: pl. sub 32.10), Morandi 2004: 536, fig. 9.19 (drawing).

Inscribed on the right-hand side of the handle when looking at the flagon from the back, at about half height, 6 cm from the rim, running upward, the upper parts of the letters pointing toward the vessel. The reading iakir given by Jacobsthal & Langsdorff was provided by Marstrander and is accepted by Whatmough 1933: 629, no. 266 bis; Tibiletti Bruno 1978: 143; De Marinis & Biaggio Simona 2000 II: 462, no. 542; Morandi 2004. Crivelli 1977: 25 suggests alternative cakir because of the bend in initial iota. Motta 2000: 216, no. 29 (cf. Pernet et al. 2006: 229) mentions ivkir as a possibility, presumably with regard to the comparatively high dating of the object. The sequence may be anthroponymic (abbreviation?), but is ultimately obscure.
