Commentary

Personal name in the nominative; see the inscription page on the uncertain reading of the anlaut (alternatively azus).

Auslauting -us could indicate an u-stem or a Latinised o-stem. As observed by Lejeune 1971: 130, n. 458, iassus- – under the assumption that zeta reflects a tau gallicum cluster and can correspond to ⟨ss⟩ – finds comparanda in Gaulish onomastics: iassus, iass(i)a, iasso, though the names are distributed in the north and east rather than southern France (see AcS II: 13 f., Delamarre 2007: 107); Delamarre (ibid. 108) notes that i̯ass- may be a variant of *i̯aks- (iaxus etc.) rather than of a base with a dental cluster. Cf. also Markey & Mees 2004: 85 f. Lejeune 1971: 130 alternatively suggests that initial /i̯/ is the reflex of the preverb di- in combination with the base ass- as in diassumarus etc. (see the morpheme page): #di-assu- > di̯assu- > i̯assu-, but this sound change is quite ad hoc.
