Commentary

Lexically in OIr. coil, MW cul 'meagre, lean, narrow'; Pokorny IEW: 610 compares Latv. kaîls 'naked' and reconstructs PIE *koi̯(H)-lo- 'lean', but the connection is questionable (see Matasović 2009: 220, LEIA: C-6). The word is not certainly attested as an onomastic element, but cf. maybe Latinised coelus at La Graufesenque (OCK: X), DAG: 208 coilanus and CIL I 2398 coili (Hispania Baetica); see DLG: 121.
