Commentary

Masculine o-stem personal name. musu appears in Gaulish context in CIL III 5365 musonis (gen., Noricum) , XII 4853 muso (cognomen, Narbonensis) (Molinari 1974: 73 f., Tibiletti Bruno 1984: 121), but no Celtic etymology suggest itself. See also musa (Noricum) discussed by Lochner von Hüttenbach 1989: 110 and Meid 2005: 277, the latter comparing mutsa and speculating about a potential Celtic name element *muts- with the tau gallicum sound; see further muθikuś. A name musu (and derivations) of unknown origin also appears in Etruscan inscriptions, especially at Chiusi (e.g. CIE 5547, 5545 musu, 4708 musunia); see Tibiletti Bruno 1978: 160 with further comparanda from Latin inscriptions, e.g. musi (gen.) on a stamp from Campodistria (SL) and muso in a terra sigillata stamp (OCK 1218).
