The form is an o-stem personal name formed with an l-suffix (see -il(l)-). Celtic comparanda can be found, if sparsely, for both rup- and rub-. See the discussion in Rhŷs 1913: 24 of some of the forms cited by Holder AcS II: 1237, esp. rubellinus in Transalpine Gaul, though the distribution in place names may indicate a non-Celtic base (cf. Motta 2000: 212). Holder AcS II: 1248 lists isolated onomastic forms in rup-; Schmidt KGP: 116, 262 has CIL XIII 994 adruppo (Aquitania). Cf. also the coin legend RIG M-247 rupios (previously read rubios).
