From the PIE root *sent- 'to go'; the u-stem in OIr. sét, W hynt, OBret. hint 'path'; other derivations are present in words for 'companion': OIr. sétig 'wife' (< *sentikī), MW hennydd 'companion, friend', Bret. hentez, Corn. hynsa 'neighbour' (< *sentii̯o-), s.
